While in-office treatments are certainly an effective way to treat vein conditions and get the relief you deserve, there are some things you can do at home to help reduce lymphedema leg swelling. Keep reading to find helpful at-home tips for managing swelling associated with lymphedema.

What is lymphedema?

Lymphedema is a condition characterized by the accumulation of lymphatic fluid, resulting in swelling in the legs, feet, arms, or hands. Common symptoms of lymphedema include:

  • Aching and discomfort in the extremities
  • A full or heavy feeling, particularly in the extremities
  • A sensation of tightness
  • Swelling in the feet, ankles, legs, or arms
  • Restricted range of motion

What causes lymphedema?

Lymphedema is often a result of damage to or blockage in the lymphatic system, which is responsible for fluid drainage. Surgery, radiation therapy, or infection can disrupt this system, leading to fluid buildup. Primary lymphedema, which is usually inherited, might develop due to abnormalities in lymph vessels. Secondary lymphedema is commonly associated with cancer treatment, surgical procedures, infections, or traumatic injuries. Regardless of the cause, seeking medical care and taking a proactive approach to lymphedema management can greatly improve the condition's outcome.

How is lymphedema treated?

Lymphedema treatment focuses on reducing swelling, improving circulation, and enhancing overall quality of life. Professional interventions may include compression therapy, specialized exercises, and manual lymphatic drainage performed by our trained specialists. In some cases, minimally invasive procedures might be recommended to alleviate symptoms.

What happens if lymphedema is left untreated?

Leaving lymphedema untreated can lead to worsening symptoms, decreased mobility, and potential complications such as infections. It's essential to seek timely medical care to slow or prevent the progression of the condition and its symptoms.

Is there a cure for lymphedema?

While there is no outright cure for lymphedema, it's important to know that the condition can be managed effectively. Symptoms can be controlled to slow down or even prevent the advancement of the condition. Proper management often involves a combination of medical interventions and lifestyle adjustments.

Is there anything I can do at home to reduce lymphedema swelling in my legs?

Here are some simple yet effective strategies you can practice at home to help alleviate lymphedema-related leg swelling and discomfort:

  • Elevate your legs: Elevating your legs above heart level for short periods can encourage the lymphatic fluid to flow back toward the heart, reducing swelling.
  • Stay active: Engage in regular, gentle exercises like walking, swimming, or yoga to promote circulation and lymphatic flow. Our team can help recommend specific exercises based on your condition, mobility, and other factors.
  • Practice proper skin care: Keep your skin clean, moisturized, and protected from cuts and infections. Apply lotion to prevent dryness and use sunscreen when outdoors.
  • Wear compression garments: Our specialists will recommend a proper compression garment routine. Following these recommendations for wearing compression garments can aid in managing swelling.
  • Healthy diet: Stick to a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains, which can support your body's healing processes.

As a board-certified, family practice physician, and a patient of Vitality Vein Care, although I live just over two hours away from this facility, I have still referred many patients to them, because they are worth the drive. I believe they provide the best of care to their patients, and with each patient I have sent, I continue to receive wonderful feedback regarding their experiences with Vitality Vein Care. I have consistently seen good outcomes, and some seem nearly miraculous, so, if anyone is hesitating for an evaluation, I believe they’re worth at least the first visit, and to receive the education they have regarding the condition that they find.

Truly a full service process. Entering the Allen location is so pleasant. Amber is always prepared to review your appointment details and will speak with the team to get you seen at your convenience. Audrey and Omar are next and the process is smooth. Everything from paperwork to the procedure itself, they are prepped and ready to serve with a kind and professional disposition. Nurse Josh carries a bedside demeanor that is calming and reassuring. The staff is courteous and conscientious of your physical and emotional health and ensured I was informed and comfortable with all that was happening as it played out. They have stress balls, music and just the right amount of banter to stay relaxed while getting these important procedures done. My swelling has been extensive for over a decade in spite of treatments at that time. This experience has addressed the correct veins with the least invasive procedures and diminished my swelling approximately 60% so far and we are expecting less pooling in my legs as I continue to heal. I will be sure to add my vein staff to my annual exams to ensure I stay healthy and mobile while free of swelling and discomfort of varicose veins. I would recommend vein health to be “a thing” for everyone and certainly to trust Vitality Vein Care for their health! Five stars every time!

I couldn't be happier with every aspect of my experience at this facility. The entire staff is terrific, and from the very beginning they were extremely friendly, accommodating, and thorough. I was referred to Vitality Vein Care by my primary doctor after experiencing swelling in my ankles that was becoming more frequent. My initial visit consisted of an ultrasound and after ward RN Stephanie was a wealth of knowledge, explaining every detail of what was causing the problem. She went into great detail of the types of procedures they perform to solve the issue and how it corrects it. She is also just as great a listener, and was ready and able to answer any questions or concerns I had. It's been a multi-step process, and I've now had three procedures with Dr. Hart that have gone very well, with no issues, only improvement. And every step of the way, Stephanie and Dr. Hart have explained what to expect - there have been no surprises, no concerns. All is going exactly as planned. I couldn't be any happier with the care they provide and the expertise they possess. Prior to my time with Vitality Vein Care, I had to deal with pain walking up or down stairs (and trying to hide it). I'm thrilled to be able to run up and down them, now, like I used to! I'm incredibly grateful.
